The History and Significance of the Myers-Briggs Personality Test

Introduction

The study of personality was a lifelong passion of Katharine Briggs. As early as her teenage years, she started observing human behavior to try to understand better how personality affected one’s ability to be a good parent, teacher, or student. She and her daughter, Isabel Briggs-Myers, documented their observations on personality, and it became a long-term fascination of Isabel’s as well. When they discovered Jung’s work, they compared their findings to his theory and were excited when they found them to be consistent (Meyers, 2006).

World War II was going on at the time, and there were many people working in jobs that did not suit them. Isabel wanted to do something to improve performance and job satisfaction, for both civilians and soldiers. She decided to find a way to measure people’s personality traits so that she could help them find what positions suited them better and not only increase job satisfaction, but also reduce the stress caused by a miss-match between personality and job duties. She explained her ideas to her mother and soon they were off and running collecting data and analyzing results to improve the questions they designed (Meyers, 2006).

Isabel and her husband published the first copy of the MBTI themselves but were eventually approached by Educational Testing Service, most known for publishing the SAT, and ETS took over publishing the test (Meyers, 2006).

Construction

The MBTI is a forced choice test that is usually self-administered. There are 126 questions, not including the two separate forms that are available to assist in the individualization of the generated report. There are four equally valuable preference categories that could lead to 16 different type designations. Each category has two preferences to choose from that range from one extreme to the other: extroversion vs. introversion; sensing vs. intuition; thinking vs. feeling, and judging vs. perceiving. Each response generates a point value that is used to determine personality type (McCaulley, 1990).

Reliability and Validity

Although there are some differences, depending on the sample used, internal consistency has been established for the MBTI. There is also strong support that the test adequately reflects the Jungian personality theory it is based on (Chen Miao, 2007). Some studies have shown that the test-retest reliability in adults is not as high as one would expect since Jung thought that personality was to some extent a set variable once adulthood was reached (Pittinger, 2005). Other studies showed that on average 92% of adults who retook myers briggs type indicators the test received the same four letters. The percentage is lower if there is a long gap between tests or if the test taker is younger. Younger test takers showed 66% received the same four letters and 91% had at least three of the four letters remain the same (Chen Miao, 2007).

Significance

There are many uses for the MBTI, including educational counseling, career counseling, job placement, team building, and personal development. A better understanding of personality types can help improve relationships as it allows one to accept others as they are or at least better understand why they act the way they do. It helps supervisors identify strengths and weaknesses in their employees so they can do a better job with employee placement, and can reduce conflict in the workplace allowing a more productive and positive working environment to develop. It also provides an outline to develop training programs (Allen, 1994).

Conclusion

Although it started out as a simple idea from a mother and daughter interested in watching people, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator soon became one of the most used personality tests available (Chen Miao, 2007). Many well-known companies, including Hallmark Cards, have used the MMTI for many years not only to assist them with hiring decisions but also as a basis for developing strategies for change and developing a strong team that can communicate effectively with employees of all personality types (Overbo, 2010). Although not everyone involved in psychology is an enthusiastic supporter of the MMTI, there are many who are, myself included.

SENSOR – S and INTUITIVE – N

EXTROVERSION AND INTROVERSION ARE HOW WE PRESENT ourselves to the world around us. Sensor and Intuitive (Intuition) are how we perceive information and they are as different as night and day. A high scoring Sensor and a high scoring iNtuitive have an extremely difficult time communicating with each other. Unless one or the other is a very patient and understanding person, then this can lead to serious conflict in peer-to-peer interactions but even more so in a superior-subordinate relationship.

Sensors, as the name implies, draw their information from the five senses; hearing, feeling, seeing, smelling, and tasting. There is no intermediate step between physically sensing the bit of information, converting it in brain, and understanding what it is. For an iNtuitive, there is such an additional step. Once the information is perceived, it gets lost with all of the other bits of information and understanding derives from the “intuitive” process of combining all of the information together in the subconscious.

For example, if you tell a Sensor it is “hot outside”.they may look at a thermometer or ask you what the temperature is. If you cannot provide them that information, then they will probably go outside to check it out. Tell the iNtuitor the same thing and they may agree with you because they already know 1) it is July, 2) it is noon, and 3) you are in Florida; who needs to see a thermometer or know the temperature to understand the statement to be true. Sensors are from Missouri and iNtuitives are not (assuming you are old enough to know the reference.)

FEELER – F and THINKER – T

THIS IS THE THIRD CHARACTERISTIC, how do you process the information you have? Do you let your emotions take over, ‘F’, or do you use logic to figure things out, ‘T’? As with the others, this is situational, but maybe more so. My score makes me a very weak ‘T’, a score of 1 or 2 if I remember correctly. When I am writing my hubs, i tend to use the Thinking side of this personality trait, but when I dealing personnel issues with my company, I process information through my “heart” as they like to say. The stronger a ‘T’ I am, however, the less likely it is that you will let emotion cloud your decision making. Likewise, the higher the score on the Feeling side, the “rationale” your decisions are. Although they may be perfectly good decisions, they will befuddle a strong Thinking type.

JUDGER – J and PERCEIVER – P

THIS IS A TRICKY ONE. WHILE THE FIRST three personality types come straight from work by the scientist Carl Jung, this last one is a creation of Myers and Briggs. This characteristic sort of circles back to how you present your decision-making to the outside world. If you are a Judger, ‘J’, you relate to the world as an F-T, the processing function, if you are a perceiver, then S-N would be your style as they relate to gathering. That doesn’t mean those (S-N or F-T) are what your scores came out to be, it is just how you prefer to come across to others.

Judgers are: planners, list-makers, and sure-footed in their judgement. Perceivers are procrastinators, always looking for more information, indecisive.

FINDING YOUR MBTI SCORE

I HAVE TAKEN THE MBTI SEVERAL TIMES over the past 30 years, and it has been consistently the same. I found a site for this Hub where you can take the survey yourself, if you choose. It is at HumanMetrics.com. It is a quick, 72-question survey (the real on is about 120 questions long) and only takes a few minutes.

I took it again and received these results:

That is the first time the result has changed, I must be getting soft in my old age; the third category, Feeling over Thinking used to be reversed by about the same amount. Also, my Perceiving score is normally higher. (They used a percent scale instead of a 1 – 9 scale). If you look at my ‘I’ score, you can see why I write hubs rather than give lectures. The N-P combination explains why most of my hubs contain polls of one sort or another.

THE POINT OF THIS HUB

SPEAKING OF POLLING, THAT IS WHY I WROTE THIS HUB, to gather information. INTPs or INFPs both “wonder” a lot; they are curious about a lot of things and I am no exception. What follows is an increasing number of polls (as I think of questions to ask) to see if I can determine certain relationships between MBTI scores and other human characteristics; you will see what I mean when you get to the questions.

You, dear reader, are my subjects in this experiment, if you so choose to be. That, in and of itself will introduce some bias because people with certain combination of MBTI functions have already found this Hub boring and have gone elsewhere, some aren’t interested in HubPages at all, for that matter. Over time, however, I should get enough answers to see if my hypotheses are correct; hypotheses which I will keep to myself for the time being (so as not to influence the outcome), but will publish later at an appropriate time.

So Please, keep coming back.

The first percentage are those that fall into that category on a national basis; the second percentage is what the current Hub survey results.

It is interesting to note the bolded percentages are what is found in the general population; and the percentages on the right is the representative sample of hubbers who take the survey and answer these polls. Even though there are only 52 results so far (11 Extravert reports), the deviation for INFJs and INTJs is rather astonishing as is the total lack of ESxx, which normally account for 34% of the general population! It makes a pretty clear statement about the characteristics of people who enjoy Hubpages and this kind of information.

HYPOTHESIS #1 – HANDEDNESS

My first survey has to do with whether or not there is any relationship between handedness and certain aspects of our personality traits; specifically how we gather and process information. I believe it is fairly well established that there are measurable differences between right-handed and left-handed people. I want to see if it shows up in the MBTI.

Based on the Previous Poll, I Need to Ask This One

CONSIDERATIONS FOR HANDEDNESS RESULTS

One source I found said that 7-8% of people in the non-US world are left-handed, while 9-10% of Americans are lefties. Another source suggests that 10-11% of Americans are southpaws of which 9.7% are male and 12.5% are female. The common number used is 10%.

Using this information, if handedness was evenly distributed among MBTI groups, then around 10% of each of the above categories would report being left-handed; this is an “unbiased” result. To the degree the actual outcomes vary from this indicates a bias toward that handedness for that particular group.

Right now, with only 46 respondents all you can surmise is a potential result, there isn’t really anything statistically you can say about it. Once there are 40 results (an average of 5 results per choice), then very broad statistical interpretations can be made. And guess what, we are there.

Based on the tables below and the facts that 1) E and I were left out, 2) that there is a major under representation of Extraverts in the sample so far, and 3) there appears to be a bias toward lefties in the S-N, F-T groups, I added a new poll asking for the handedness of Extraverts and Introverts. So if you are reading this part to see what is new but have taken the polls already, please go back and take this new poll. Thank you.

HYPOTHESIS #2 – INTELLIGENCE and MBTI

People can be intelligent in many different ways. Normally we think of a high IQ (intelligence quotient) being related to scientists, but that is necessary the case. You can have geniuses in advertising, art, entrepreneurs, etc; each one of those have a different combination of of MBTI functions. This is what I am trying to ferret out here.

To take this survey, you need to know your MBTI and have an idea of what your IQ score is. It doesn’t need to be exact for I am just looking at ranges with 100 being “normal”. This will be a series of three polls as I am testing for various personality functions.

It will a while before I get enough responses to draw any conclusions regarding the IQ characteristic. But, you might start drawing your own conclusion regarding the IQ of the Hub audience who likes to read these kind of Hubs and to take/respond to these surveys. Definitely on the upside when you consider 100 is a well establish average (and not very many people are fudging).

HYPOTHESIS #3 – TOLERANCE vs E, I, S, N, J, and P

In the earlier discussion I observed that a strong S and a strong N will have a very hard time understanding the other and can become rather frustrated over the others behavior. The frustration arises from the fact that each simply doesn’t understand nor picture the process the other is using to gather information. This can lead to difficult situations and I am wondering if there are MBTI combinations that might lend themselves to these to types working together.

Again, it is a series of polls, one for Extroverts and the other for Introverts. Beyond that, the questions are the same.

A LITTLE ANALYSIS TOLERANCE OF OTHERS

CURRENTLY, 16 EXTROVERTS AND 32 INTROVERTS HAVE RESPONDED to this question; there are several ways to cut it. So let’s get into it. From the table below, a few numbers should pop out at you, the three in the bottom right corner.

What I am trying to discern is if certain personality types believe they are more or less “tolerant” of others. At first blush, that may be the case, but don’t take it to the bank just yet. It would seem at the moment that a N or iNtuitive-type personality think they are pretty good at handling situations where each side looks at an issue from differing perspectives without getting bent out of shape.

HYPOTHESIS #4 – “DETAILEDNESS” vs E, I, S, N, J, and P

IN MY OBSERVATIONS, THERE IS AN UNMISTAKABLE DIFFERENCE between people who are detailed oriented and those who are not (at least one commenter, who prompted this question, and myself aren’t). These next few surveys are to try to discern what characteristics to look for, say when you are hiring somebody to do data entry work, something my company is in great need of.

EXTRAVERTS seem a little uncertain as to whether or not they are detailed oriented (although I wouldn’t take much stock in just 7 responses). INTROVERTS, on the other hand are much more certain as to what they are, they are just split as to whether they are detailed-oriented or not.

It is way too soon to tell whether SENSORS are detailed-oriented or not, but INTUITORS are starting to lean toward not being so much.

FEELERS seem, at first blush, to be leaving details to others while the jury is still out for THINKERS.

The fact the JUDGERS are leaning slightly toward less detailedness surprises me. We will see what time will tell. PERCEIVERS, on the other hand, are split; which also surprises me.

HYPOTHESIS #5 – YOUR MBTI INFLUENCES YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATION

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS SHOULD sort themselves out into MBTI categories. When you read through the definitions of E-I, S-N, F-T, and J-P I get a sense of which ones those leaning Right and Left may be associated with. For those of us who think they. as a rule, don’t lean either way, it may be harder to determine.

Let’s find out.

Observations:

Clearly, whether you are a Judger or Perceiver makes no difference in your interest in these types of Hubs.

Also, Feelers and Thinkers both seem to enjoy mental exercises like this.

The differences show up between Extraverts/Introverts and Sensors/Intuitors. At the moment, these show up in the simple fact that neither Extraverts nor Sensors even make it this far. In other words, Hubs of this genre hold very little interest to Extraverts or Sensors.

A Rare Myers Briggs Category

The Myers Briggs assessment determines whether people are introverts or extroverts, whether they use their five senses or their intuition to make decisions, whether they base their assessments and/or conclusions on thinking of feelings, and, lastly, whether they are comfortable with unanswered questions or whether they need closure and, therefore, make ‘judgements.’ Ergo, an INTJ woman would comprise the following categories.

Introversion: The I stands for introverted which means she obtains her energy and personal satisfaction http://www.trendhunter.com/freepersonalitytest from her thoughts, imagination, and/or creativity rather from external factors like other people, status, and/or possessions.

Intuition: The N stands for Intuition. It means that she draws from stored unconscious knowledge accrued through the years from books, movies, other people, experience, and reflection. Generally, the INTJ has top notch information stored.

Thinker: The T stands for thinker (as opposed to feeler), and this means that decisions are based on a process of deduction and analysis rather than what she feels. Bear in mind that feeling is related to emotions and is not the same as intuition.

Judgement: The J stands for Judgement and it means that closure is preferred. Open ended and unresolved, problems and issues are not welcome to the lady INTJ.

Rare Combination of Intuition and Thinking

Generally, most profiles would combine feeling with the intuition, and thinking with the use of the senses (taste, smell, touch, feeling, hearing). The INTJ is unusual in their combination of intuition and thinking. The result is an individual with a highly developed imagination and the ability to apply detail to visualisation, thus bringing into being original and practical solutions.

Other names for the INTJ are strategists and systems builder.

Work Motivation by MBTI Personality Types

Certain occupations or situations can build us up or tear into our motivation. Managing our health with exercise, good diet and sleep do certainly go a long way in keeping us motivated at home, work and for living in general. However, what do you do when this does not prove to be enough?

Knowledge of what motivates us, mentally, can help guide us in managing our lives well. It can enable us to better see the choices we have as to what things in a job will energize us and what will drain us.

This is helpful also to business managers as they build and guide their team members.

How to know what really motivates me

Each of the 16 Myers-Briggs® personality types uses mental energy in a unique way. Knowing your type can provide insight into the way you are mentally energized, and what will make you want to keep getting out of bed in the morning.

Each person uses one of the above four mental functions as their favorite. This is the dominant mental function and it uses the largest part of a person’s psychological energy.

Our favorite mental function is the one out of the four that we are most conscious and aware of. It is the one we can best control, direct and make use of it.

This is what we most enjoy using, so we will tend to acquire a lot of experience in using it. We like to take personality test myers briggs on those tasks, relationships and even careers that require its use. We are pulled more often towards doing what energizes us–much more than towards what is boring or draining.

Meyers-Briggs (Personality) Type Inventory (MBTI)

SENSOR – S and INTUITIVE – N

EXTROVERSION AND INTROVERSION ARE HOW WE PRESENT ourselves to the world around us. Sensor and Intuitive (Intuition) are how we perceive information and they are as different as night and day. A high scoring Sensor and a high scoring iNtuitive have an extremely difficult time communicating with each other. Unless one or the other is a very patient and understanding person, then this can lead to serious conflict in peer-to-peer interactions but even more so in a superior-subordinate relationship.

Sensors, as the name implies, draw their information from the five senses; hearing, feeling, seeing, smelling, and tasting. There is no intermediate step between physically sensing the bit of information, converting it in brain, and understanding what it is. For an iNtuitive, there is such an additional step. Once the information is perceived, it gets lost with all of the other bits of information and understanding derives from the “intuitive” process of combining all of the information together in the subconscious.

For example, if you tell a Sensor it is “hot outside”.they may look at a thermometer or ask you what the temperature is. If you cannot provide them that information, then they will probably go outside to check it out. Tell the iNtuitor the same thing and they may agree with you because they already know 1) it is July, 2) it is noon, and 3) you are in Florida; who needs to see a thermometer or know the temperature to understand the statement to be true. Sensors are from Missouri and iNtuitives are not (assuming you are old enough to know the reference.)

FEELER – F and THINKER – T

THIS IS THE THIRD CHARACTERISTIC, how do you process the information you have? Do you let your emotions take over, ‘F’, or do you use logic to figure things out, ‘T’? As with the others, this is situational, but maybe more so. My score makes me a very weak ‘T’, a score of 1 or 2 if I remember correctly. When I am writing my hubs, i tend to use the Thinking side of this personality trait, but when I dealing personnel issues with my company, I process information through my “heart” as they like to say. The stronger a ‘T’ I am, however, the less likely it is that you will let emotion cloud your decision making. Likewise, the higher the score on the Feeling side, the “rationale” your decisions are. Although they may be perfectly good decisions, they will befuddle a strong Thinking type.

JUDGER – J and PERCEIVER – P

THIS IS A TRICKY ONE. WHILE THE FIRST three personality types come straight from work by the scientist Carl Jung, this last one is a creation of Myers and Briggs. This characteristic sort of circles back to how you present your decision-making to the outside world. If you are a Judger, ‘J’, you relate to the world as an F-T, the processing function, if you are a perceiver, then S-N would be your style as they relate to gathering. That doesn’t mean those (S-N or F-T) are what your scores came out to be, it is just how you prefer to come across to others.

Judgers are: planners, list-makers, and sure-footed in their judgement. Perceivers are procrastinators, always looking for more information, indecisive.

FINDING YOUR MBTI SCORE

I HAVE TAKEN THE MBTI SEVERAL TIMES over the past 30 years, and it has been consistently the same. I found a site for this Hub where you can take the survey yourself, if you choose. It is at HumanMetrics.com. It is a quick, 72-question survey (the real on is about 120 questions long) and only takes a few minutes.

I took it again and received these results:

You have strong preference of Introversion over Extraversion (100%)

You have distinctive preference of Intuition over Sensing (75%)

You have slight preference of Feeling over Thinking (12%)

You have moderate preference of Perceiving over Judging (33%)

That is the first time the result has changed, I must be getting soft in my old age; the third category, Feeling over Thinking used to be reversed by about the same amount. Also, my Perceiving score is normally higher. (They used a percent scale instead of a 1 – 9 scale). If you look at my ‘I’ score, you can see why I write hubs rather than give lectures. The N-P combination explains why most of my hubs contain polls of one sort or another.

THE POINT OF THIS HUB

SPEAKING OF POLLING, THAT IS WHY I WROTE THIS HUB, to gather information. INTPs or INFPs both “wonder” a lot; they are curious about a lot of things and I am no exception. What follows is an increasing number of polls (as I think of questions to ask) to see if I can determine certain relationships between MBTI scores and other human characteristics; you will see what I mean when you get to the questions.

You, dear reader, are my subjects in this experiment, if you so choose to be. That, in and of itself will introduce some bias because people with certain combination of MBTI functions have already found this Hub boring and have gone elsewhere, some aren’t interested in HubPages at all, for that matter. Over time, however, I should get enough answers to see if my hypotheses are correct; hypotheses which I will keep to myself for the time being (so as not to influence the outcome), but will publish later at an appropriate time.

So Please, keep coming back.

The first percentage are those that fall into that category on a national basis; the second percentage is what the current Hub survey results.

Extrovert Responses: 13 (Its been 13 (months since I started this project and have received about 5 – 6 responses per month, of which 1 a month has been from an Extravert!. Further, of the Extraverts, one finally came in as a Sensor (~1/8/15) while only 7 Introverts have been Sensors.)

It is interesting to note the bolded percentages are what is found in the general population; and the percentages on the right is the representative sample of hubbers who take the survey and answer these polls. Even though there are only 52 results so far (11 Extravert reports), the deviation for INFJs and INTJs is rather astonishing as is the total lack of ESxx, which normally account for 34% of the general population! It makes a pretty clear statement about the characteristics of people who enjoy Hubpages and this kind of information.

HYPOTHESIS #1 – HANDEDNESS

My first survey has to do with whether or not there is any relationship between handedness and certain aspects of our personality traits; specifically how we gather and process information. I believe it is fairly well established that there are measurable differences between right-handed and left-handed people. I want to see if it shows up in the MBTI.

Based on the Previous Poll, I Need to Ask This One

CONSIDERATIONS FOR HANDEDNESS RESULTS

One source I found said that 7-8% of people in the non-US world are left-handed, while 9-10% of Americans are lefties. Another source suggests that 10-11% of Americans are southpaws of which 9.7% are male and 12.5% are female. The common number used is 10%.

Using this information, if handedness was evenly distributed among MBTI groups, then around 10% of each of the above categories would report being left-handed; this is an “unbiased” result. To the degree the actual outcomes vary from this indicates a bias toward that handedness for that particular group.

Right now, with only 46 respondents all you can surmise is a potential result, there isn’t really anything statistically you can say about it. Once there are 40 results (an average of 5 results per choice), then very broad statistical interpretations can be made. And guess what, we are there.

Based on the tables below and the facts that 1) E and I were left out, 2) that there is a major under representation of Extraverts in the sample so far, and 3) there appears to be a bias toward lefties in the S-N, F-T groups, I added a new poll asking for the handedness of Extraverts and Introverts. So if you are reading this part to see what is new but have taken the polls already, please go back and take this new poll. Thank you.

HYPOTHESIS #2 – INTELLIGENCE and MBTI

People can be intelligent in many different ways. Normally we think of a high IQ (intelligence quotient) being related to scientists, but that is necessary the case. You can have geniuses in advertising, art, entrepreneurs, etc; each one of those have a different combination of of MBTI functions. This is what I am trying to ferret out here.

To take this survey, you need to know your MBTI and have an idea of what your IQ score is. It doesn’t need to be exact for I am just looking at ranges with 100 being “normal”. This will be a series of three polls as I am testing for various personality functions.

It will a while before I get enough responses to draw any conclusions regarding the IQ characteristic. But, you might start drawing your own conclusion regarding the IQ of the Hub audience who likes to read these kind of Hubs and to take/respond to these surveys. Definitely on the upside when you consider 100 is a well establish average (and not very many people are fudging).

HYPOTHESIS #3 – TOLERANCE vs E, I, S, N, J, and P

In the earlier discussion I observed that a strong S and a strong N will have a very hard time understanding the other and can become rather frustrated over the others behavior. The frustration arises from the fact that each simply doesn’t understand nor picture the process the other is using to gather information. This can lead to difficult situations and I am wondering if there are MBTI combinations that might lend themselves to these to types working together.

Again, it is a series of polls, one for Extroverts and the other for Introverts. Beyond that, the questions are the same.

A LITTLE ANALYSIS TOLERANCE OF OTHERS

CURRENTLY, 16 EXTROVERTS AND 32 INTROVERTS HAVE RESPONDED to this question; there are several ways to cut it. So let’s get into it. From the table below, a few numbers should pop out at you, the three in the bottom right corner.

What I am trying to discern is if certain personality types believe they are more or less “tolerant” of others. At first blush, that may be the case, but don’t take it to the bank just yet. It would seem at the moment that a N or iNtuitive-type personality think they are pretty good at handling situations where each side looks at an issue from differing perspectives without getting bent out of shape.

HYPOTHESIS #4 – “DETAILEDNESS” vs E, I, S, N, J, and P

IN MY OBSERVATIONS, THERE IS AN UNMISTAKABLE DIFFERENCE between people who are detailed oriented and those who are not (at least one commenter, who prompted this question, and myself aren’t). These next few surveys are to try to discern what characteristics to look for, say when you are hiring somebody to do data entry work, something my company is in great need of.

EXTRAVERTS seem a little uncertain as to whether or not they are detailed oriented (although I wouldn’t take much stock in just 7 responses). INTROVERTS, on the other hand are much more certain as to what they are, they are just split as to whether they are detailed-oriented or not.

It is way too soon to tell whether SENSORS are detailed-oriented or not, but INTUITORS are starting to lean toward not being so much.

FEELERS seem, at first blush, to be leaving details to others while the jury is still out for THINKERS.

The fact the JUDGERS are leaning slightly toward less detailedness surprises me. We will see what time will tell. PERCEIVERS, on the other hand, are split; which also surprises me.

HYPOTHESIS #5 – YOUR MBTI INFLUENCES YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATION

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS SHOULD sort themselves out into MBTI categories. When you read through the definitions of E-I, S-N, F-T, and J-P I get a sense of which ones those leaning Right and Left may be associated with. For those of us who think they. as a rule, don’t lean either way, it may be harder to determine.

Let’s find out.

POLITICAL LEANINGS vs EXTROVERT-INTROVERT

I thought I would start keeping track of how these numbers develop over time. Initially –

N = 9

And 2 Extraverts and 7 Introverts responded so far.

If one were foolish enough to draw a conclusion from this small sample, one would think:

Extraverts tended to lean to the Left

Introverts tended to be thoughtful or lean to the Right

With N = 24

Extraverts still tending to lean toward the Left

Introverts are now lean toward the Left while staying thoughtful.

We will see what the next period brings.

ANOTHER INTERESTING AREA IN LIFE that seems to always cause problems is the well known rule that “What you say, is rarely what they heard”. I was writing hub on a different subject when this question popped up.

Observations:

Clearly, whether you are a Judger or Perceiver makes no difference in your interest in these types of Hubs.

Also, Feelers and Thinkers both seem to enjoy mental exercises like this.

The differences show up between Extraverts/Introverts and Sensors/Intuitors. At the moment, these show up in the simple fact that neither Extraverts nor Sensors even make it this far. In other words, Hubs of this genre hold very little interest to Extraverts or Sensors.

Rock The Dean’s List: Or Understanding Your Instinctive Learning Style

Each one of us has an instinctive and natural style of learning. When this learning style is understood and applied greater academic achievement can be realized at every level of education.

Various academic researches tell us that new information will “turn over” roughly every five years. If that trend continues, students who are in grades one through three will graduate during a time where, in some fields, there will be new information every 38 days!! Wow, that could mean that the information they learned this month may be outdated two months from now!!

And really it is the same at any level of study, the high school and college student faces the same information overload in addition to other interesting challenges that knowledge of instinctive learning style can ease.

This “instinctive learning” style I speak of is based upon knowledge of Myers-Briggs personality type. Although this article has college students and those bound for college in mind, learning at any level as indicated above, can be improved when we know our Myers-Briggs personality type and the natural learning patterns that are instinctive to us because of our typing.

While there are many theories of learning most have a basis in the undeniable reality that people “perceive” or take in information through there five senses and then they “reason” upon what they just took in. I mean now, think about it what else is there. This transcends culture, religion, family….everything….humans take in information and then they decide what to do with it in very instinctive ways.

This article will focus on taking information https://www.facebook.com/pages/Free-Personality-Test/615796118551501 in and some learning realities of “perception”.

According to the Myers-Briggs approach, people take in information with their senses (seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling) and with a “sixth” sense of “intuition”. Then people will “reason” or decide what to do with the information they are taking in or did take in at some point in the past with “thinking” and/or “feeling” behaviors. This is the heart of it according to Myers-Briggs and the result when energy preference is factored in, and we won’t say much about that in this article, is that we find 16 personality types or, if you will, 16 different learning styles!!

So, some folks are learning naturally, instinctively if you will, with a heavy and powerful dependence upon their senses. These “types” these people are very good at learning when specific information is presented, they are naturals for following precise instruction in the classroom, memorizing facts, doing things in the class in a more routine, predictable manner, they thrive in a more “hands-on” teaching environment. These folks are the “Sensors” of the world.

Then we have those who are learning with their “intuition” that sixth sense of just knowing in general, conceptually what is going on. These people, these “types”, learn by seeing and seeking naturally insight, they use imagination to go way beyond the specifics of the facts presented, they value what is creative, new, original, they thrive on theory and are powerful at “reading between the lines” in any classroom situation; a more “hands-on” environment may drive them to distraction or “bore” them to tears! These folks are the “Intuits” of the world.

Those who learn as Sensors have and can use Intuition; but, it is not instinctively preferred thus when the Sensor uses Intuition it is harder, perhaps more stressful and too much use of Intuition can “irritate” the Sensor. Likewise for the Intuits who are using sensing to study and learn. The more “sensing” (detailed, practical, in-the-moment and realistic) material is the harder they have to work. This basic understanding of which “type” which learning style one is, either a Sensor or an Intuit can jump start a student at any age onto the Dean’s List or help them to achieve a higher level of academic success.

Now once we understand the above, if one is a Sensor or an Intuit, then in college for instance, we run into some very interesting realities that we do not see in K-12 education. The biggest reality is that, far and away, most college faculty are Intuits not Sensors and yet most college students are Sensors not Intuits!! Did you follow that? Most college students are ready to instinctively use their detailed, practical, precise, hands-on learning preferences in class rooms taught by professor who don’t have the slightest idea of what that means!! A bit of an exaggeration there, but the fact is the teacher is delivering material in a conceptual, general, theoretic, non-hands-on manner to folks who have to work extremely hard to understand that! Oh yes some college professors are Sensors but the majority are not. There are almost twice as many professors with natural preferences for Intuition than there are students who prefer Intuition!!

The secret to success here is for both Sensors and Intuits firstly understand this realty, then secondly understand their type, then thirdly know they need to be ready to use a lesser preferred learning style to do well. And we can do this and it is easier to do when we know this ahead of time and know this is natural.
